Whilst Violet animated the shot of the horses’ eyes moving, I worked with Clara on making the boy’s puppet.

by Clara and me respectively
Clara drew the boy on scrap paper as how she imagined him to look. We wanted to have an additional joint at the neck so that we could move around his head. It was a bit awkward figuring out how to do that with the boy’s hood on his head, so we made a quick change in the 2D sequence: during the explosion after he takes a picture, his hood will be blown back.
I then started on making a closer prototype on another piece of paper. I drew each shape of the separate pieces, with a dotted circle for extra material for the split pins (shown as the bigger black dots). The hoodie being blown back was also so that we could try to hide some of the split pins on him.
The puppet designs I did were then traced on parchment paper, with each piece made separately. The one on the left in the right picture was too small, so I sized it up, as seen in the same picture.
Evelyn and Clara spent the rest of the workshop animating the 2D section.

Over Tuesday, I made each piece of the puppet, as I didn’t have time to start on Monday’s workshop. I wanted the puppet to have a distinctive 3D look, so I tried to make as many layers as I could. Starting from the bottom, there’s the body, undershirt and head, hoodie, arms and hoodie pocket, then the hood. I also made these layers distinctive from each other by smudging charcoal on each layer and varying in how dark they were. I initially wanted to make another layer for the hair as well.

After finishing the puppet, I started on another arm, although a bit bigger than the puppet. One scene has the boy reaching up to touch the blue horse, so I made a separate arm for that. On the back, there is a tab holding down another layer of the actual arm underneath the boy’s sleeves. This was in case Violet wanted to animated the hand moving a bit so that the whole movement wasn’t too stiff.
Anika continued cutting additional clouds for the explosion, some of which were pieces already cut out from Violet. I stayed after the workshop ended to cut the rest, except for the blue outer cloud (the art shop was closed, so we couldn’t go out to buy more yet). Violet is to cut out the rest tomorrow so that the explosion section would be animated.

On Thursday, Violet animated the explosion. She also used bits of gold paper from a hole puncher, although it didn’t come up as shiny as we hoped.

Before winter break, Violet designed how the credits shot would be. Today when discussing it, we had different ideas on how we could make it. We could either draw the shot on paper and then put it underneath the rostrum, or make a tiny version of the funfair with paper. I thought the drawing on paper would look a bit weird, considering how everything else was a paper model and it wouldn’t fit if it were a drawing underneath a camera, so we decided on the mini paper versions.

I measured a bit of paper of how much space we had under the camera (another group was using the rostrum today, so I had to base it off of previous measurements) so that we could create a rough idea of how big each piece should be. My idea was to make it in the same way as I did with the puppet: draw our pieces on paper, trace it over in parchment paper to cut out and then outline on the actual materials.

Nothing to note.
