[OOYH] Winter Break Summary

Storyboard 5
by Violet

During winter break, I needed to make a final animatic of the 2D sequence, now that our story was absolutely finalised. Violet drew a quick storyboard for me for reference. This animatic was going to be for Clara and Evelyn to then reference when starting the 2D animated section.

I was aiming to have this sent to our groupchat by the end of the first week of break. I unfortunately couldn’t, and it was sent around 3 weeks late instead. This left us with less than before Semester 2 started.

This was so that we could figure out timings and how long to spend on each section, with the addition of transitions (we didn’t consider how long transitions would take, therefore when we did, it put our film into even more of a time crunch). We already had some footage of the stop motion section, and realised we’d have to split the overall film’s duration unevenly between both sections. The original plan was around 10 seconds each, but then changed to having more screentime for when the man was in the colourful funfair.

Clara and Evelyn drew character sheets of how the protagonist may look. Our original idea was to have a man, but they suggested a teenage boy, as it would emphasise a naive/curious/adventurous personality for why he would’ve been in an abandoned funfair. We also needed the design to be simple as we would have to make the same character as a puppet for the stop motion section.

Earlier before winter break started, we decided to make him have colourful eyes. We did want everything black and white, but we wanted to make it more obvious that the boy turned into a carousel horse later on. Therefore, he would already appear in the film with blue eyes, matching the blue horse later.
