[Monochrome] Week 03 Summary

26.02.24 – studio practice exploration & testing

I once again focused on charcoal for today. I expanded into the transformation aspect that I wanted to try and explore, and so I spent the workshop working under a rostrum camera and using straight ahead animation to create the sequence below.

I only used one piece of paper for this clip. This was because I also wanted to test if I would be able to animate charcoal with just a stick of that and an eraser without creating so many frames on individual pieces of paper. I think the end result was very successful, as the charcoal provided a grainy texture which was useful when creating a boiling effect. There were stains left from previous drawings, but I ended up liking that a lot more than I thought.

28.02.24 – absurdism & fictioning

We spent today as a class on automatic writing, as well as creating sentences from clippings of words from newspapers.

01.03.24 – studio practice exploration & testing

I managed to shoot two quick tests today. From Monday’s test and how I liked the stains from previous frames from the charcoal, I wanted to try to incorporate our surroundings? Such as the shape moving through different surfaces like my hand, or jumping from one sketchbook to another. I also figured I could find ways to transition into different materials, as I want my film to include a variety rather than just one e.g. only fine liner.

Test 07 is loosely inspired by Conversation With a Whale by Anna Samo. Whilst this test was successful, I later realised that it would include colour from my hand, which doesn’t align with the elective’s guidelines and name. We were also advised against editing our films, so I can’t shoot a clip with my hand and make it black and white. Therefore, I scrapped this idea.
