The main priority was the carousel, as we decided it would take the longest and harder than other parts. We stuck with mainly a colourful palette as the film would happen during the night. We thought about having a more traditional colour scheme (i.e. navy blue, red, gold, etc), but we needed this to stand out against a dark background.

Making the carousel

The carousel poles are just coffee stirrer sticks painted in gold wax that Clara and Evelyn bought over the weekend. I worked on cutting out the carousel, whilst Clara and Evelyn worked on the mini horses. You can see a sample piece (testing out the sizes) in the picture on the right above.

I continued cutting out the pieces on Tuesday. Today, I brought them in and we started to sample different materials onto it to test the colours. There are also the horses on the right made in accordance to the carousel’s size.

Violet and I went to test out the prototypes together. This was our first time using the rostrum, and we didn’t think about testing it before actually trying to film. This was an apparent problem immediately, as when setting up, the camera needed to be moved further down/have the shot more zoomed in so that we could hide the objects that set up the rostrum. Therefore, the carousel was too big for the set.

Evelyn brought in the background props she had made after Wednesday’s workshop today, and I with the separate carousel pieces from Thursday. Anika, Violet and I worked on colouring the carousel together again, whilst Clara and Evelyn made new horses to match the size too. The new horses are also much brighter and have more distinct variations in colour, as it was important to tell which horses were which for when we film.

Clara also worked on the sky, and started with painting a draft on Procreate. Whilst the concept was interesting, the moon being like a shark fin in an ocean wasn’t related to the themes of our film. We did keep the gradient that she proposed though.

WEEKEND

Nothing to note.
